Antique Victorian 1840's 14K Gold, Green Chrysoberyl Cat's Eye & Old Mine Diamonds Mourning Brooch

This extremely rare, antique 1840's mourning brooch is an incredible piece of Etruscan Revival jewelry that peaked during the Victorian era. It is rendered in 14K gold with square and round beads and granulated scrolls and loops around the outer edge, and on top of the lower frame, it is crowned with an oval shaped, high dome green chrysoberyl cat's eye cabochon stone, prong set in the center (14mm X 9mm; 6.5-7 carats; very valuable by itself), surrounded by 18 round, old mine cut diamonds (extremely clear, most likely from India diamond mines), each measuring 2mm across or .03 carats each for a total of .54 carats of diamonds. The diamonds are all prong set in a fancy, raised setting.

The entire brooch measures 1 3/4" inches tall X 1 3/8" inches wide. It weighs in at 18 grams or 11.574 dwt (pennyweights).

The back is capped with thick, beveled glass, oval in shape, measuring 1.25" X 7/8" of an inch. This is where the locks of hair or other keepsake were placed in memory of a loved one.

This stunning, museum quality brooch is in extremely excellent antique condition. This piece, the chrysoberyl, and the old mine cut diamonds were recently appraised by a Master Gemologist. Also, the gold tested positive for 14K.

This elegant piece has an interesting provenance. It came from the estate of a Pittsburgh steel tycoon family, from the woman whose father knew Winston Churchill well (She showed me the sterling silver and carved jade dragon handle humidor box gifted to him by Mr. Churchill, as well as a photo of her father playing badminton with Churchill (wearing Bermuda-style shorts, no less!) , circa WWII era. Winston Churchill visited this family several times during World War II, regarding production of steel for the war industry for Great Britain under the Lend-Lease Act (1941-1945).
