This four generation piece( dubbed The Magic Wand) began as a gift, sometime around the mid to late 1880's.Combining simplicity with a touch of intrigue(there was at one time a story behind the marriage of elements) of the wing or feather pearl, the embedded emerald within it and the diamond inside the five pointed star. But sadly enough memories fade and stories become altered over time.Yet there seems to be a common ground for it pertaining to DAR, better known as Daughters of the American Revolution. In my research I can contribute the pearl, the star and the emerald to this early organization, but it ends there. The shape of this fresh water pearl is known by some as a feather pearl and by others a wing pearl. It It was formed on the back side of the Mollusk Margaritifera Margheritifera that were once found in the Mississippi River.Today they are becoming more and more rare due to the effects of pollution and the Zebra Mussel that attach themselves to this smaller mussel and suffocate them among other factors. This majestic 3/4" long x 1/4" wide Mississippi River pearl has a rich and creamy iridescent luster.Embedded in the pearl is a small emerald with a rough gold frame. At the base of the pearl is a sparkling diamond centered inside a five pointed star. All gold is tested 14K. The total length of this one of a kind pin is 3 1/4". There is a small wave to the gold on the stick pin.The old jewelry box that it rests in is not original but it does come along for the ride.I have read somewhere that 95% of today's pearls are cultured. Not the case here, just mother nature doing her part with another " NATURAL BEAUTY ".
