1791:Georgian Period: George Wintle Sterling Stuffing / Basting Spoon

I am thrilled to offer to you a rare and beautiful 1791 basting spoon with an engraved family crest by Master Silversmith George Wintle. George Wintle entered approximately 11 marks over his career and was most renowned as a spoon maker. There was a scandal and trial accusing George of " Duty Dodging ",a name given to hallmark forgery in it's day.He was however found not guilty yet his son served some time for the crime.Hallmarked with the 5 marks dating the time and signature of his work, the silver standard mark of the lion passant, the city mark of the leopard's head crowned for London England, the non forged duty mark, the letter date mark and Wintle's maker mark.A beautiful one headed eagle crest is engraved on the spoons handle.I have tried to no avail to match a family name to this crest but have had no luck yet. This wonderful old basting spoon measures 11 1/4" long with a bowl measurement of 3 3/4" x 2" of a very rare if not one of a kind piece.
