1960's: Paint By Number Art of Colonial Children

Don't laugh just yet. Believe it or not first production Paint By Number Art has and is one of the newest Retro Collectibles since 2001 and for those with high insight since the 1980's. William L. Bird an avid collector of PBN Art, in 2001 was curator of The PBN Exhibition at The Smithsonian Museum and thus began the public in search of works. This quaint pair painted on wood seemed so familiar to me when I spotted them at an estate sale,I just couldn't take my eyes off them. I must have been staring at them for awhile for I was approached by a women who said," Aren't they kind of neat?" I asked her where they came from and all she knew was that they had hung in a bed room at her parents summer home in Nantucket ever since she could remember. I inquired where her parents were from and she said the West Coast. I was from Cincinnati . Upon bringing them home I propped them up and for weeks studied and reflected them. Then while gazing on the little girl once, I noticed at the bottom of her dress there were a few spaces that had been left unpainted and a blob of paint on her wrist. BINGO! No way.... it just couldn't be. What were the odds? A real needle in a hay stack. Believe it or not here goes. One year for Christmas my sister Annie received this exact PBN kit. I remember it snowing a lot that winter and going down to our fathers work room in the basement and watching her ever so carefully for weeks paint these pieces. Just as she was so close to finishing the little girl I tipped over some of the paint and destroyed her art, so she thought. She was so angry and upset I don't remember ever seeing them again. Well, of course she forgave me and the paintings were forgotten until now. Anyway the paintings measure 16"x 12" and are truly one of a kind and find. I suppose this really makes me The House of Lost and Found. Lost or misplaced anything? Let me know.
