1884: Handmade Birch Bark Hand Fan

Birch Bark fans were originally a craft of Native Americans.Birch bark sheets could be fold or flat sheets could be slipped into a split stick handle as shown on this 127 year old survivor.Hand stitched together and decorated with etched and painted ornamentation and sighed H.P.E. by the artist.The fan itself measures 7" x &' with the handle included it measures 14" long.It was probably made to commemorate a birth or birthday or wedding.
