1893: Sterling : Columbian Expostion, " Womans Building" Tribute Spoon

Planning began in 1890 for the Chicago Worlds Fair, which was sponsored and hosted by 46 nations world wide.Of the 200 buildings erected, one had to scratch and claw their way in with opposition and resistances from the public, media and fair authorities. But with determination and the backing of some of the most well known suffragists of the era( Jane Adams, Susan B. Anthony and Lucy Stone) to name a few, a team of all women built and filled this monument to women world wide.It was the design of architect Sophie Hayden and was her first and last project.By the end of the project she suffered a complete breakdown and never designed another building. The Womans Building housed beautiful architecture elements and designs, statuary and murals and art from women all over the world. The library housed over 7000 books all written by women. In the going back in time game,I would have loved to have toured the entire fair and this elaborate tribute to women. This antique souvenir spoon from The Womans Building is made of sterling with a gold wash bowl and a detailed embossed picture. The twisted handle leads to a finial of the Administration Building.Hallmarked on the back it was made by The Charles Wendell Company of Chicago which was in business from 1850 - 1909.It measures 4 3/4" .
