Henry Wardsworth Longfellow ( 1807 - 1882 ) of Portland Maine was an American Poet and educator at both Bowdin College and Harvard. This narrative poem is his fictional account of the early days of Plymouth that was founded by the Mayflower Pilgrims. It also covers the courtship of John Alden and Priscilla Mullens who were descents of the pilgrims as was Longfellow himself. The poem was written in his personal journal on December 29th 1857 and was first published on October 16th 1858 by Tucker and Fields Boston. Now here is where a mystery unfolds.Although the copyright page has a date of 1858,the publishing page gives a roman numeral date of 1859 and the title page is stamped *1 for a first edition when no other 1858 first editions have this marking. Now the only markings in this book are on the first inside page which reads Louiffe Hilliard Christmas 1858 ??? and on the back cover page Addie Hilliard.Brown cloth embossed decorative boards with gold gilt letting on the spine. All 215 pages are present, plus the 12 pages of adds for other publishing's and the date of November 1858.It is in very good condition with out marks ( aside from age appropriate foxing) or tears.Cover, pages and binding are tight and clean and in very good condition. A odd and quite different little published edition of a major and important piece of American literature.
