This wonderful antique Catholic rosary features reddish-brown wood beads hand carved into sweet rosettes. Each bead is unique in size, shape and design, and is mounted on silvered steel pins. The larger pater beads are adorned with two openwork bead caps that appear to be silvered brass. All caps match perfectly and are no doubt original to the rosary.
I love the old rosaries that use coiled links instead of chain between the decades. These are wrapped with copper wire in a lovely pattern that will engage you during prayer. Of varying length, their color harmonizes beautifully with the wood without disrupting your meditational flow. Typical for this time period, which I estimate to be early to mid 1800s, there is no center medal.
At the bottom is a somewhat rustic, hand-stamped crucifix that I suggest you examine under magnification. The trefoil designs in each tip contain what looks like a palm or some other botanical element. The body of Christ is elongated and segmented, with a most unusual nimbus above His head. The dotted cuff adds a touch of refinement to the well aged, creamy brass patina. Just beautiful!
According to religious tradition, the 6-decade Brigittine rosary was instituted and promoted by St Bridget of Sweden. It is also accepted that the Carmelite order used the 6-decade rosary before Vatican II. The 7 pater beads are said in remembrance of the Seven Sorrows and Seven Joys of the Blessed Virgin. The 63 ave beads honor the traditional 63 years of Mary's life on earth. Note that this directly contradicts the 72 beads and years represented in the Franciscan Crown rosary dedicated to the Seven Joys of Mary. Regardless of which tradition is correct regarding Mary's age, this is a wonderful devotional for those faithful to the Blessed Mother.
In excellent antique and original condition, this religious devotional is a fine collectible that is sturdy enough for active prayer. Comes boxed and ready for gift-giving.
