This very interesting Catholic rosary features glossy black glass beads that appear to be molded and feel smooth to the touch. They are mounted on silvered brass pins and oval link chain with similar S-hooks that attach the center medal and crucifix to the rosary. The styling is Edwardian although I believe this was crafted shortly thereafter in the 1920s.
The ornate center medal features profiles of Jesus and Mary set amid scrolls and radiances and a beautifully shaped cuff. Note the star and flowers around Mary and the Sacred Heart of Jesus... subtle and sweet. The medal appears to have a copper base that was silvered at one time. Devotional wear has revealed the copper yet the dark patina within the recesses of the design suggests the continued presence of the silver.
The equally ornate 2-layer crucifix is impressed with Gothic-style designs in each of the flared arms. Also silvered, much of the silver remains with hints of copper peeking through the corpus and INRI plaque. What I find most interesting is that the back of the crucifix is marked "Canada." For all the vintage and antique rosaries one can find in Canada, the vast majority are French, so this is unique indeed!
Whatever its provenance, this charming religious devotional is ideal for anyone who enjoys a "basic black" rosary whose lovely components make it anything but somber. In excellent vintage condition, it is ready to continue its life of prayer and inspire you with its beauty. Comes boxed and ready for gift-giving.
