This incredible vintage Catholic rosary amplifies the radiant beauty of aventurine art glass, also known as goldstone, by pairing it with glowing gilded brass components. It is an elegant and sophisticated blend of classic design and quality components that likely hails from the 1950s.
Goldstone is a wonderful form of art glass whose beauty is breathtaking and which can be mistaken for natural gemstone. It originated in 17th century Venice and continues to be made today. It is created by adding copper or copper salts to the reducing flame and although the glass appears to be reddish-brown, it is actually colorless. When the reduced goldstone cools, the copper crystals appear to be gold flecks and the results, as evidenced by this rosary, are stunning.
Each elongated bead is broadly faced, fully interlocked and double-capped with a gilded o-ring for added elegance. Some beads have minor nicks at the ends which for some reason, is common on rectangular beads with a narrow tip. Fancy spacers with a filigree-like scroll inside surround the paters, leading your eye around the rosary to the Victorian-style scapular center and large, ornate crucifix. I love the wide, pointed tips and circle at the center of the crucifix. The beadwork is also lovely, as is the detail on the molded corpus. There are two hallmarks on the front of the bail; the back is plain and ready for engraving.
I just noticed that the pin holding the corpus and center layer to the cross is missing at Christ's feet. The remaining three pins are intact and everything is firmly in place. Despite having handled this rosary extensively, I did not notice this until I looked at the details with a loupe. While the feet are slightly raised off the cross, it is not dramatic and nothing that can't be fixed with a tiny amount of appropriate adhesive. Price has been adjusted accordingly.
Except for the conditions noted above, this scarce rosary is complete, original and in excellent vintage condition. The gilding is thick and rich, and its energy is quite compelling. It would make an outstanding addition to any rosary collection and would be a treasured gift for anyone who appreciates fine design and exceptional artistry.
