Often described as "folk art, this thin sterling silver medal is stamped with a simple rendering instead of being cast or molded. It features a sweet scalloped edge filled with a geometric pattern and tiny hash marks that accentuate the scallops. At the center is a very accessible image of Mary with her arms extended and a flattened halo above her head. She is set against a background filled with graduated rays… they start small and thin at the center and become deeper and more dramatic as they reach the inside edge of the cuff.
On the verso is a punch mark (or “poinçon” in French) in the lower left and what remains of the initials “EB” engraved in large cursive letters. There are some visible scratches that are not surprising given the age of this medal and the fact that it was a treasured devotional to “EB.”
This scarce type of medal would be an excellent addition to your collection and would look very sweet displayed in a case. I do not recommend wearing it extensively as the bail has thinned somewhat at the top, although a jeweler could certainly reinforce it. A wonderful and unique item!
