This extraordinary American treasure is 45" tall, 26" wide, and 19" deep from the foot on the front of the screen to the foot on the back of the screen. It is quite difficult to describe the piece because it is so well and profusely carved. Also, although I refer to front and back, it really does not have a front and back as both sides are completely carved and both sides have different needlepoint presentations. It is reversible! The depth, quality, and style of the carving is certainly the equal of any higher end carved rosewood furniture of the mid nineteenth century. Both the front and back are carved with slight variations due to the nature of the hand carving process. Both front and back also have wonderful needlepoint work, one side depicting a minstrel group playing instruments, and the other side depicting animals which include a leopard, a crocodile, a camel, and a stork. They both also have floral work, and both sides are in great condition. The quality and quantity of the carved oak is beyond belief. You cannot find a spot on this piece that is not carved! Starting with the legs and feet, they are deeply and completely scroll carved with acanthus decorations. There is a large, bulbous carved and turned finial between the legs. Across the bottom of the screen, both front and back, is heavy, deep scroll and floral carving with a cabuchon in the center. The sides of the screen, left and right, front and back contains heavily and finely carved scroll and floral carving. Each side contains 2 distinct floral swag areas. From top to bottom on the left and right, each side contains 15 to 20 extraordinarily well carved flowers in addition to the rich, deep scroll carving which is evident all over this fire screen. At the top of each side is a well carve head which appears to be an Indian brave. The top of the screen contains more of the wonderful deep floral and scroll carving with an extraordinary open carved flower basket containing about ten flowers including wonderful roses. The carved frame is in perfect original condition, albeit a bit dusty! This piece has been in my personal collection for the last 25 years, and I am only the second owner. The quality, style, and condition is the finest I have ever seen. It has no losses and no repairs. It has not needed any! I will be happy to answer any questions or provide more photos if necessary.
