Oil on Canvas after Rubens

This is an outstanding rendition of the infamous self portrait of Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640). The original is located in the Uffizi Gallery in Italy as well as, another in the Windsor Castle. This particular rendition is signed on the reverse "Scarselli Anita" and retains its original red wax seal from the Uffizi Gallery. According to a specialist of Old Masters this wax seal was placed on replica paintings that were authorized by the Uffizi Studio in Florence, Italy. This was a common practice between 1840-1940 when the Uffizi Gallery would allow talented and skilled artists in their employ to copy certain paintings and sell them as souvenirs to visitors of the Museum. It was quite the "to do" to have an authorized replica of a painting from the museum. The wax seal has a shield in the center and simply says along the edge "R. Galleria De??? Uffizi." the oil measures 20x16 and is housed in a very elaborate gold ornate frame measuring 22x26. Condition is Excellent, could use a good cleaning.
