This is The Smithsonian Collection Of Newspaper Comics, Edited by Bill Blackbeard and Martin Williams, Smithsonian Institution Press and Harry N. Abrams,Inc., Washington D.C., c. 1977.
This is an incredible collection (336 pages) of newspaper comics, both in color and black and white, from 1898 to the mid 1970's. The book is divided into eight sections. The first seven sections focus on the newspaper comics that appeared from 1898 - 1950 and the last section is devoted to comics appearing after the fifties. The comics chosen for this collection "have intrinsic excellence and were popular with the readers of their time." (Inside jacket)
There is a small tear on the spine of the dust jacket and some mild age-yellowing of the pages. Aside from that, this book is in excellent condition with clean, smooth pages. This is a BIG book measuring 10 1/4" X 14 3/4" X 1 1/2" and weighing over five pounds!
This book would be perfect for anybody who appreciates newspaper comics as a reflection of how we view the world... then and now.
