This scarce set is volume I and volume II of "History of the World: comprising a general history, both ancient and modern of all the principal nations of the globe, their rise, progress, present condition, etc., including a complete history of the United States to the present time also the late war with Mexico, California, etc. the whole embellished with numerous engravings representing battle scenes, views of cities, the crystal palace, flags of different nations, coronations, processions, costumes, etc..." This was by Samuel Maunder and printed in 1853 by Henry Dill. It is a first edition and was available by subscription only and is complete as it was only a 2 volume set. This is a very thorough book with great illustrations! More photos can be sent via email upon request.
These are app. 9"x5.5"x2.5". These have leather spines and covers with marbled edges. Volume I has 771 pages and the other 740 pages. These are in good condition overall with corner, edge, spine wear and bumping. The top cover of volume I is off and there is much chipping to the leather spine - it is flaking off. The leather of both books is flaking and the covers are coming loose. I would recommend rebinding. The binding is tight and all pages intact. There is age toning and yellow spotting. There are a couple of moisture stained pages in the center of volume I - looks like someone spilled something while the book was open - all is still legible. Volume II has a big colored map that folds out and this does have tears. There is a name an address in ink on the inside blank page. There is a musty smell to the volumes.
