We have done extensive research and are still not sure of which painter painted this wonderful Dutch oil painting on board. It is signed J. Franken. The specialties and style and versatility of both artist is very similar. I have found a signature by Johannes Petrus Franken that is very similar but from research still think it is J.H. Franken. Either artist was and is significant in the art world with painting of this type and complexity selling at auction for $2000-$7000, gallery prices would be approximately twice that amount.
The painting is an oil on board and portrays a busy Dutch winter scene with frozen canal, village people, and mill. It measures approximately 21.5" by 14". It is in very good condition with the exception of a small edge thin scrape in the upper right hand edge and a more significant scrape in the lower left hand quadrant that needs restoration as pictured. Due to the need for minor expert restoration needed, we are offering this painting at an extremely discounted price.

(Translated from The Naar Collection) I found no landscapes sold at auction for this artist in the past 10 years. A Nude with Veils Circa 1929 sold at Christies Amsterdam in Jan. 2005 for $6,217. His portrait and floral still life auction estimates found range $1500-$4000. No recent landscapes were found but would be more desirable to collectors.
