Fossil Ivory Walrus Tusk Section Polished Aleut Free Shipping
This fine fossil walrus ivory tusk section has nice light color with beautiful grain. It is nice and solid all the way through. This ivory tusk section is sanded and polished and ready for your scrimshaw, knife handle, carving, jewelry making, or collecting. The ivory weighs approximately 1.25 lbs and measures 9 inches long, 2 1/4 inches wide at the widest and .75-1 1/8 inches thick at both ends.
This ivory tusk section is from the Estate of the widow of Eugene Smith who was in the US Forestry. In 1950 he was sent to the Pribilof Islands (formerly the Northern Fur Seal Islands) to manage the fur trade for the US government. He and his wife lived on St. Paul one of the 4 volcanic islands that sit off the coast of Alaska and approximately 40 miles north of the Artic Circle. He was well liked by the populous and received gifts and a Chamber of Commerce commendation written on hide parchment for his service to the Aleuts and the community. He returned to Oregon by 1960, this is part of his collection.
