Simon & Halbig 909 Belton Fashion Doll for French Market This offering is for an extremely rare early Simon & Halbig 909 closed mouth bisque head Fashion Doll , made for the French market. The doll's height is 18 inches. The swivel dome head, on its shoulder plate, has two stringing holes and is marked "909//6." The doll was made in the 19th century, circa 1879. The quality of the bisque is exceptional, with fine pale coloring and absence of any factory flaws. Her auburn, mohair wig is styled in curls and on old pate, but I believe both were replaced. The doll has finely feathered brows, with beautiful large brown paper weight eyes. glass eyes, Black eye liners are present, along with finely painted upper and lower lashes. Red accent dots are present at the inner corners of the eyes and nostrils. Her closed mouth is beautifully formed, with exquisite red painted lips. There is a darker center line between the lips. The cheeks have a natural blush and there are no rubs. The bisque head is in excellent condition with no factory flaws, cracks, chips, hairlines or restoration. I can't remove the clothing sewn onto the doll, so a photo of the shoulder plate isn't available. The top of the silk dress, being naturally thin, has allowed me to carefully examine the doll by touch. I can feel nothing amiss--no raised areas or depressed areas, no cracks or chips--just a smooth surface.
BODY & COSTUME: The doll is on her original antique gusseted kid body. The body is in excellent condition with no mends, holes, weakened areas, leaking etc. It is still supple. Her kid hands have separate fingers and are in good condition except for the age darkening--to be expected. The doll is elaborately dressed in the French fashion of the day--an exquisite walking suit, with an underskirt and bloomers. The dress and undergarments are made of antique fabrics and are sewn with great attention to detail. The dress, with its fringe trim, is made of black striped light lavender colored silk like material. There is hand crocheted lace trim and black buttons that decorate the fitted bodice of the walking suit. The material and fringe are in excellent condition with no faults found--no holes, rips, tears, discoloration, repairs or mal odors. The doll comes from a non-smoking home.
