This offering is for a vintage, circa 1950's, solid sterling nielloware compact. It measures 2 ¼" (flat side to flat side) and has a weight of 64 grams. Each side has a beautifully etched design. The lid depicts the Royal Barge on the river in Bangkok, with the Temple of Dawn in the background. This design is very hard to find. The Royal Barge, with oarsmen, is highly sought after by collectors. The base of the compact depicts another scene of the Temple of Dawn in the background, with a traditional Siamese working boat in the foreground. The detail is exquisite on both sides. The octagon shape of the compact is very desirable. The push clasp opens and closes the lid with ease. The interior is excellent in every respect--the lid over the powder well, the powder well and the mirror. The compact is marked beneath the mirror, "STERLING SIAM." The condition is excellent. There is extremely minimal surface wear that is difficult to see without magnification or camera flash. I doubt the compact was ever used, coming in its original box in very good condition. The box has a brown reptile designed surface. It is marked as shown in the photo. Siam was renamed Thailand from 1939-1942 and again in 1950. While the compact could be dated to the earlier period, I feel confident in dating the piece to the 1950's. It is a beauty that will surely please--guaranteed..
