c1860 Antique Christening Gown & Slip - Broderie Anglaise

Hand done Broderie Anglaise, Cartridge pleating, delicate drawstring for neck and chest area, finest smoothest cotton.

In Christening gowns, you will often see a gorgeous panel such as this. The bodice is characteristic for the period with its slight square shape (can see this best in photos where it is not gathered).

The fabric is the finest, smooth pristine white cotton. It is not delicate more sheer like a batiste...rather more like an Egyptian cotton that is almost like satin to the touch. You can see the fineness of this cotton in the photos, and from a mile away when you see the gown in person.

The bodice has many of the style elements from the early 19th century with its pull strings to gather the top and around the chest. It has dainty cap sleeves, a ruffle around the neck, the top part of the Broderie Anglaise panel. It has 2 buttons in the back, and a couple of knife pleats.

The skirt or lower portion of the gown features cartridge pleating where it attaches to the bodice....this type of pleating or gathers would allow the garment to be super full...again typical for this period in fashion.

The slip is created with same cotton. It has horizontal knife pleats around lower portion, and Broderie Anglaise trim around hem. It has a slightly shaped flat bodice...typical for the slips made for Christening gowns. There are ties in the back.

A true heirloom. Enjoy.

CONDITION: Excellent vintage condition. There are a few tiny holes...pin dot size, and a mend on the bodice. A couple of tiny mends on slip. NONE of these detract from this amazing antique gown and slip.
