Antique Bennington Rockingham Large Pitcher 1860's. American, mid 19th Century. Tree and Twig handle. Molded Stag on one side and Boar on the other...plus other game animals and birds on the body. This is truly a beautiful piece, the relief is quite deep and quality superb.
**American Rockingham, the ware for which Bennington, Vermont, became famous in the mid-nineteenth century, is English in origin and is named for the Marquis of Rockingham, whose works at Swinton produced a ware of similar brownish color. The pottery itself is cream-colored or yellow ware that is dipped or spattered with a brown glaze before firing, achieving an overall mottled-brown effect.
The terms "Rockingham" and "Bennington" pottery have long been used interchangeably, and although much of the Nineteenth Century wares made in Bennington were Rockingham, considerable quantities were produced in potteries scattered around the eastern half of the United States.
