An elegant c1900 men's antique or vintage tuxedo. It features a shawl collar dinner jacket, and pants with silk twill stripe. This listing is for the Tuxedo only. Many of our photos are lighter to show details.
The jacket is black gabardine with a black silk satin shawl collar. The gabardine has a smooth surface and a drapey quality to it. It is medium weight, and is very softly luminous.
The jacket is ventless, has a single button in front and 2 buttons at the sleeves. It has 2 pockets in front...none at the chest. Fully lined in a black silk with deep ivory sleeve lining.
The pants are classic Victorian cut. They are quite tapered towards the bottom and feature the characteristic angle cut on the bottom of the pant leg. This was so it could just top the front of the mans instep...and taper to the back and hit almost to the floor.
The pants are button fly, watch pocket, adjustable strap in back. They have no pleats and are tapered towards the hem. They have a silk woven stripe on the side.
The tuxedo has a label which reads: A. Betti, Merchant Tailor, Mt. Kisco, NY. A. Betti established his business in the 1880's.
ABOUT: The dinner jacket came into fashion towards the latter part of the 19th c. Introduced in England by the Prince of Wales. It was adopted as an acceptable, if not slightly less formal, alternative to the tailcoat...and became wildly popular (and still is). The shawl collar is an adaptation from the earlier Victorian smoking jackets.
