What a spectacular work of art. c1860 silk pieced Mosaic quilt. The triangles have been artistically pieced so that you get an optical illusion creating a 3rd dimension. Mosaic quilts were especially popular in the mid 19th century. I am dating this to the 1860's or maybe earlier. There is an absence of green and vibrant purple...suggesting an earlier period prior to Aniline dyes.
Most of the silk used is silk satin, although there are many other types. The colors are bold, vibrant, full of life and a joy to behold. Each of these tiny patches are hand pieced.
The basic structure of this quilt is a 9 patch...each of the squares in the 9 patch are then halved into triangles. The squares are 1-3/8", with the 9 patch being approx 5". It is masterfully created in both color balance and construction.
It has a saw tooth border which is in itself quite wonderful. PLEASE NOTE...the first image DOES NOT show the border in as beautiful condition as it is.....it is in fine condition, this was a result of editing the background.
The backing on this quilt is a soft printed cotton...creamy white with pinkish flowers.
Any surface or decor this quilt adorns will be greatly enhanced. The reflective surface, warmth of the bold colors and richness of the satin, plus the amazing optics make this quite special.
A B O U T SILK QUILTS Silk in the 19th century was definitely the fabric of the wealthy. Because silks of this era were manufactured for affluent buyers, they were of the highest quality and will often have retained their original strength, luster, brilliance, and condition today. Most of the silk antique quilts that we have acquired over the years were made before 1890, These textile works of art were not meant to be used...they were for show and treated as art. In the mid 19th century, two of the most popular silk quilt patterns were the Mosaic and the Log Cabin.
CONDITION: Overall very good. Sold as found. Displays beautifully...any issues mentioned are not really a detraction. A couple of the sawtooth border teeth are frayed...see pic. A few of the patches are a bit worn...see pic. again only in a very minor way.
