Vintage 1960s Travilla Feather Dress Vest Iconic Marilyn Monroe Designer
Vintage 1960s Travilla Dress Vest Iconic Marilyn Monroe Designer
In his play Hamlet,William Shakespeare wrote "Clothes maketh the man" another William a few hundred years later proved that clothes most certainly do maketh the woman. Academy Award and Emmy winner William Travilla designed the vast majority of Marilyn Monroe's most memorable costumes including the infamous white "subway grate" dress she wore in The Seven Year Itch. His sartorial relationship with Marilyn Monroe is the subject of a new book "Dressing Marilyn: How a Hollywood Icon Was Styled by William Travilla",publisher's note below. This incredible Travilla dress and vestment outfit is nothing less than extraordinary. From the flower power print of the dress to the feathered bell sleeves and matching vest, this outfit defines the Counter Culture era. The fabric is superb, a heavy, silky satin with a most sumptuous hand, is the perfect canvas for the wildly colorful print in rich tones of gold and mustard and coral and cream. The floor length dress has a modified empire waist, hand stitched back zipper and snaps, and,of course, those outrageously glorious feathered sleeves. The vest has deep armholes, and is double breasted with snap/button closures. The pieces are magnificently executed with couturier details such as hand sewn zipper, snaps and label. Both pieces are fully lined with appropriate interfacing etc. In excellent vintage condition, there is one teeny spot on the front that gets lost in the print. The dress has been stored for a very long time and refreshing cleaning is recommended. This has got to be one of the best outfits ever and I doubt it's equal can be found. It comes from the closet of my BFF, a legacy from her mom, a most gracious and stylish woman. This Travilla masterpiece, though certainly museum worthy, is not quite ready to settle down, it's fresh, lively and party ready...are you?
