HUGE Antique Woods Burslem Pottery Pink Red Transferware Turkey Platter
Imagine bringing the turkey to table this holiday season resting on this rare and enormous transferware platter, oh my! Measuring 21 1/4" X 17 1/4", this is a substantial and impressive earthenware piece. Made by the famed Woods Burslem, England Company, master potters for more than 200 years, this antique/vintage platter is beautifully designed. In the center of the platter, a turkey happily forages in a field with a pastoral scene in the background and a border of flowers and foliage.
In wonderful condition for it's age (approximately 70 years), it is marked in red "Enoch 1784 Ralph 1750" on either side of a man holding a sign that reads "Wood's Burslem England". According to my research, the company began using this mark in 1931 and in the late 1940's the mark changed with the addition of "Moses 1751" in between the other two names. There is also a mold mark but I can only make out a "W".
There is a very tiny scratch at the 3 o'clock point of the rim on the front and a couple of dings on the back and of course, the stilt marks. There is some crazing and some very light staining that is not distracting. Using any of the recommended ways to clean old china will rectify this if you desire. Personally, I feel slight, age appropriate imperfections add character. The colors are vibrant and uniform, please ignore any photographic glare. A platter of this size, this old and in this condition is a rare find indeed!
