This is a very unusual and rare marionette.Marionettes have been used with opera for more than two centuries. In most cases, the puppets were surrogates for singers who could handle the music well but may not have the gifts of beauty or acting skills. On some occasions, singers stood offstage while marionettes would move in a small stage in front of the audience. This is a beautiful example of a vintage opera marionette. He is dressed in a splendid outfit with a fitted ornate jacket with jeweled buttons. He's wearing boots and a cape. His sword is metal with the word toledo on the side. His face and hands appear to be painted papier -mache, although I am not 100% sure of the composition. He stands 28 inches tall and all the strings and apparatus appear to be in excellent working order. He is in original condition showing very little signs of wear. This is an excellent find for the collector.
