Over the many decades I have been in the antique business I have had many Victorian mourning pieces of jewelry, however I have never had a piece of this quality. This amazing brooch is dated 1865 and is gold filled and can be worn as a brooch or a pendant. It has an amazing black enameled and intricate gold scroll design. In the center is an oval framed woven hair design of the highest quality. There are two different colored hair woven into the design and the reason is obvious when you read the inscription engraved on the back. It reads "In Memory Of R.Burton Sept.2,1855 and E.Burton Oct.27,1865, husband and wife, Please refer to photos. It measures 2 inches by 1 5/8ths inches and is in excellent original condition. This would definitely be the centerpiece of an antique mourning jewelry collection.
