This is a great piece. It is Circa 1880/1890 and is a tape measure in the form of a gentleman's straw hat. The hat appears to have originally been brass plated over tin and has appropriate wear. The metal hat shows traces of a black band around the center which a straw hat of the period would have. It is very detailed showing an intricate pattern of woven straw which continues to the underneath part of the brim. The really great thing about this tape measure is the saying which is in raised letters on the top of the hat stating, Most Hats Cover The Head This Covers The Feet. The tape measure comes out and retracts and the entire piece is in great condition showing normal average wear to the finish. It is hallmarked on the underside, please refer to photos. It measures 2 inches by 2 1/4 inches. This is a rare piece to add to a sewing collection.
