This Vahan necklace has a beautiful design giving an illusion of a continuous strand of patterned coils. The top of the necklace is well rounded with the backside being flat to assist in a good fit against your neck. The necklace keeps the approx. shape that you see in the first two photos.
The gold is in excellent condition with no rips, dents, holes, cracks or repairs. The accent lines on the coil patterns are all well defined. The clasp and security catch are in smooth working order and close with a light click. The hallmarks are on the backside of the flange of the closure and read: "Copyright Mark", A. VAHAN, 14K. Discounting the closure flange the necklace measures 17 inches long and is 1/4 inch wide. The necklace weighs 62.3 grams of 14 karat gold. I have visited the Vahan website as well as the many stores he designed for and this necklace is not offered for sale.
Leon Calousdian is the founder of Alwand Vahan and can trace his family ties to the jewelry business back for 4 generations. He was born in France and moved to the USA in the early 60s. Before opening his own company in New York in 1968 he designed for several prestigious companies which included Hermes and David Webb. Calousdian has sold and exhibited his designs at the famous Bergdorf Goodman Stores and was one of the first jewelry designers to be represented there exclusively. He then went on to design and manufacture for other famous retailers like Cartier, Bloomingdale's, Neiman Marcus and Mayor's. Bette Midler, Linda Evans and Hillary Rodham Clinton are just a few of the many celebrities who have worn Vahan. Mr. Calousdian has been quoted as saying: "I create jewelry like I would a film set: with mood, drama, and my customers wear the jewelry like actresses. When I design jewelry, I think of women as film stars. I want them to be observed, envied, and admired."
