Gorham Sterling Fish Serving Set

This circa 1890 set has the most stunning handles. They are a beautiful graceful curved pattern with a lot of depth (top of photo #9). I can't decide if they are solid or just very thick sterling-but they are quite substantial! The pattern is in excellent plus condition-very well rounded & defined. The slice & fork have lovely shape with scallop accent rims. One fork tine & the slice have matching presentation of "RR". The blade of the slice is in excellent condition with just a few of those minuscule bites from being tapped. The fork tines are also excellent with good points. One of the four points has a minuscule burr (for want of better word). Both the fork & slice bowls have some minuscule black specks (approx 1/64"-1/32"). You can see them in photos # 4-5-6. Both bowls up by the handles have some black lines. When you loop them you see what look like very fine/thin cracks in the sterling. But with inspection you can see they are on the surface & do not go thru the bowls to the backside. I don't know if they are a makers flaw from joining bowl to handle or a form of stress from usage-I'm stumped. I found one on the fork & four on the slice (see photos 7 & 8). I did find evidence on the slice where the handle appears to have been removed and/or re-riveted (see bottom photo #9). I do feel the slice bowl has had it's attachment to the handle worked on-I just don't know to what degree. But what ever it was, we feel our great price on this set takes this repair into account. As I said before the set feels very substantial & in fact weighs 11.8 ozs = 10.75 troy ozs. The fork is 9 3/8" long x 2 9/16" at widest point of bowl. The slice is 12" long x 3" at widest point of bowl. Those stunning handles are 1 1/8" at widest point x 5/8" at deepest point. The marks are: Gorham hallmark, Sterling & either a 689 or 889 (sets model number). We cannot find a pattern name for this set but we know that more pcs are available as Rich saw 12 dinner knives in the pattern.
