This circa 1900 vase has the most stunning use of fall coloration. The base is a very deep, dark chocolate brown that leads upwards into a background of medium rust to deep, rich orange into a mottled & streaked blending of pumpkin, goldenrod & yellow. At the top 2 1/2" the vase goes back into a mottled blend of the deep orange & pumpkin with a touch of goldenrod at the top rim. Just superb shading/coloration! The cameo's colors are just as stunning as they are the same beautiful fall shades with the addition of a dark rust in the leaves, stems & flowers. Out of all the companies that did cameo glass I feel Daum is the master. No one can get the shading on a piece of glass like they could & this vase is a prime example in my opinion. In addition to it's outstanding use of color they took this vase the extra mile & did multiple textures/cuts. The base, leaves & some portions of the stems are acid cut back with a light polished finish & great detail lines. The background thru this design area is also a smooth texture. The top half of the vase is wheel cut with wonderful detail & depth. The illusion of the curled flower petals is very realistic. The background to this half is a hint of hand hammered like texture that leads into the top's approx 2 1/2" of a definite hand hammered (martele) like texture, again all wheel cut. The glass is in excellent plus condition with no chips, cracks, deep scratches or repairs. The blown top rim has it's original hand finish. The base has it's polished pontil. I did find some of those normal common makers flaws: minute unbroken bubbles, minute specks of impurities, acid drip pits & some small shinier surface spots on the base. Photo # 5 has an acid pit & impurity. Photo 9A shows some shiny spots. I also found on the chocolate bulb above the base a 1/32" line that with your eyes you think is a scratch-it is not! With a loop you see it is a silver metallic like line (photo 9B). I also found on approx one quarter of the base an approx 3/4" long spot of that shinier surface & an occasional speckling of approx 1/64" bumps (think measles) see photo # 9A & 9C is a over exposed close up. When I put the vase in front of bright light I can see two interior intermittent horizontal lines that I believe to be dirty water level rims from vase being used for flowers. Sorry I don't have anything that will fit to reach down into the vase to clean it. This is all so minor I just reported it to be accurate & so you know I inspected the vase very very carefully! The carved signature is hidden just above the leaves between stems. This magnificent vase is approx 18 3/4" tall with a top rim dia of 1 3/4" & a base dia of 5". It would be a superb decorator piece in any room of the house & definitely noticeable in a display case!
