This gigantic circa 1930 jar has a beautiful 4 1/8" dia. hand painted enamel scene accented by an engine turned (form of machined patterning) guilloche enamel 2 color border. Please excuse the white glassy look on the enamel photos-it is reflection. The scene was done by a very nice artist. Note the subtle shading of dusk above the mountains, the ruffle of her skirt, the graceful hand & foot & even a touch of blush to her cheeks. The border is comprised of an interior narrow white & an exterior, larger, lovely pastel mint green that encircle the scene. The entire enamel lid is in excellent plus condition with no chips, cracks, deep scratches or repairs. Rotating the lid for different light angles I see no problems, nor do I feel any. With intense inspection with a 10 power loop I can find just a few of those normal expected, surface only, faint scratches from use. This piece was very well taken care of & appears to have been hardly used. The 935 silver lid (sterling is 925) is also in excellent plus condition with no rips, tears, dents, deep scratches or repairs. I did find a 1/64" nick on the rim. On the interior I found a slightly raised 1/16" bump. This is original to manufacture as it corresponds to the exterior placement of a touch-mark. The rim is marked with the Austrian Hoopoe Bird touch-mark for items made after 1922. It also has a mark of 935 for the silver content. The lid removes in most positions with a slight drag but lid would fall off if jar held upside down. The hand cut & polished glass jar is also in excellent plus condition. The glass is clear, clean, & bright. It has no chips, cracks, deep scratches or repairs. The side is cut with 18 deep concave panels that have a faceted inverted V like top & a center vertical line/facet. This causes each panel to slant inwards to the 1/4" deep center vertical line. The sides of the 18 panels then have a vertical convex facet (see photo # 8 ). The bottom has been cut with a lovely, deep, star pattern. The top rim is smooth to the touch with no repairs. The sides of the jar are also excellent with just a couple of those pesky 1/64" flea bites. Looking at the base of the jar you see no chips. When you rotate the jar to view the base at different light angles I found a diamond in the star pattern that looked like it had a few smaller then 1/32" nicks. When I viewed them with a loop I found them to be a cutting tool oops. The base has 2 high points-the center star & the outer rim of the base that connects to the side panels. Where the base connects to a side panel's convex facet is a meeting point for 4 facets (see photo # 9). When viewed with my eyes I see no chips but I can find a few 1/64" flea nicks. When I rub with my finger I can find some meeting points that feel some what rough to the touch. When viewing them with a 10 power loop I find some have those 1/64" flea nicks, others have cutting tool oops from merging the 4 facets. Merging these facets was not easy & took an experienced craftsman. Photo #9 shows the top arrow on an unblemished meeting point & the lower arrow shows a meeting point with an oops. The majority of sellers would not mention this as it is so minor. But I want to be accurate & for you to know I really inspected this jar since it is in such stunning condition! The lid measures 5 1/4" in dia. The jar is 6 1/2" dia at widest point & is 3 1/2" tall with lid on. This beautiful jar is in such superb, hardly ever used, condition. It is a true treasure to use as a decorator piece or to be displayed in your cabinet. The above was written by Chris. You can tell she likes the jar! As the shop owner, I just want to add this: You will not find a finer example of 20th century enamel art on the general market. It is simply as good as it gets. I like the jar also! Rich
