Antique Augsberg Germany Engelbrecht Colored Engraving Religious Allegory

Offering a beautiful antique engraving from the 18th century, framed and under glass. This is a Martin Engelbrecht allegorical religious piece that illustrates Matthew 3:10" Even now the ax lies at the root of the trees. Therefore every tree that does not bear good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire."

Martin Engelbrecht was one of the most prolific engravers and print sellers in Augsburg Germany, at the close of the 17th century. Along with his brother Christian, Martin dominated the print trade, producing some of the finest prints of his day. His outstanding portraits and landscape studies are beyond compare and his religious and allegorical engravings display a technical aptitude superior to many of his contemporaries.

This hand colored engraving measures 8 1/2" X 12 1/2". The paper appears to be somewhat yellowed but the colors hold true. There are no rips or tears. On the top right hand corner is the number 5. The entire framed piece measures 15" X 19 1/2". All the text is in German and Latin. On the bottom left hand side is written: Lum. Pr. Sac. Caes. Maj. On the right hand side is written: Martin Engelbrecht Sculp. et. exc. a.y. I believe this engraving was rescued from an old manuscript.

Excellent and rare engraved print.
