This match striker is 3 1/2" long, double-sided, made of gilt metal and just wonderful. The design on either side of the "bellows" shape is of "Three Little Maids" from Gilbert & Sullivan's Mikado. This show was first performed in England in 1885 and it was a tremendous success. The image of the 3 little maids was very familiar to people when this was made around 1890. The condition is very good and the gilding is still very bright. It was meant to hang on the wall - usually near the hearth, thus the bellows shape. The striking surface is on either side of the bellows. A great cross collectible for the theatre enthusiast or the match striker collector.
