Here's a really special agate box with multi-colored agate stones, dating from the mid 19th Century. The box is 2 1/4" long and 1 1/8" across. The top has a checkered pattern made of several different stones. It has black and white agate or onyx, malachite and goldstone all worked into a stunning pattern. The bottom of the box is carnelian. On the inside the top is lined in slate. It may have been used as a snuff box originally. There is also an open cylinder in the back which may have held some sort of lighting device. But whatever it was used for - it's a great looking box and the condition is very good - none of the agate is damaged although the natural lines in the white agate can look like a fault - they all seem to be in good order.
