Extraordinary Victorian Pietra Dura Butterfly Bracelet, 18k Gold
Most likely obtained by a wealthy tourist on Grand Tour in Italy in the latter half of the 19th century, this was certainly the prize souvenir of the journey. Upon return, this bracelet would surely evoke "oohs" and "aahs" as the wearer recounted her travel adventures at a gathering of society's elite. More importantly, it would conjure up memories of a romantic holiday spent wandering fine museums, roaming the beautiful Italian countryside, and exploring each little shop in hopes of finding the perfect souvenir to embody the essence of the journey.
The butterflies are created from jasper, agate, malachite, lapis, and marble. The bracelet itself is crafted in 18k gold and has been assayed as such. It measures two inches at the widest point and seven inches in length, when closed. Due to the wide nature of the piece, it fits tighter than a more narrow seven inch bracelet. The weight is 87.8 grams. In very good condition for its age, there are a few light surface scratches to the plaques. The clasp works perfectly and there is an additional safety chain to keep the bracelet securely attached to the wrist. Amazing in the rarity of subject matter, materials, and the quality and condition of the piece, this bracelet is worthy of a museum.
