Victorian Pietra Dura Moth Brooch, 14k Gold

This is a fine example of pietra dura, the ancient technique of laying fine marble and stones together to create a picture or mosaic. Frequently these brooches were of a floral motif. In this case the theme is rare, a beautifully executed Victorian moth or butterfly. Two-toned brown and black colored stone gives this lovely moth or butterfly textured wings, while inlaid malachite adds a vivid burst of color. The black background makes this moth visually pop out of the frame. Set in a 14k gold twisted rope frame, the brooch retains the original clasp and a base metal pin stem. The frame is not marked, but has been assayed as 14k gold. The piece measures 2 inches by 1 5/8 inches and is in very good vintage condition.
