Mother of Pearl Buckle Calling Card Case

Visiting or calling card cases were considered objects of vertu and, as a result, they appealed to jewelers and craftsmen of all mediums and artistic expression. The variety of materials ranged from gold to fabric, silver to wood, tortoise shell to mother-of-pearl, leather to silk. Artistic creations ranged from reverse glass paintings to fine enamel work, from tooling to inlaying, from carving to engraving, from appliqués to weavings, and paintings to silver wire decorations.

A lovely etched “wallpaper” pattern provides the background for this luminescent mother of pearl calling card case. The central shield is encircled by a buckle, which symbolized strength and protection during the Victorian era. Hues of pink, blue, and green create a shimmering effect over the surface of the case. The dimensions are 3 5/8” by 2 13/16”. In good antique condition, there is a piece of mother of pearl missing from the edge of the top. The top opens and closes securely and the hinge works perfectly. This unusual calling card case would make a wonderful gift or addition to any card case collection.
