Boer War Prisoner of War Carved Articulated Crocodile Antique Toy Circa 1900

Boer War Prisoner of War Carved Articulated Crocodile Circa 1900

Recently we were fortunate to purchase some very unusual antiques from a large English country house. This was just one of those rare and unusual items that is full of history. It was found in a small 1920's photographic supplies box with the other Snake (sold separately), the box marked "made during the Boer War by prisoners".

This 13.25" (34 cm) long crocodile was hand carved by a South African soldier who was captured by the British during the Boer War (Afrikaans: Freedom War), he could have even been a civilian that was interned by the British. The second Boer War of 1899-1902 aimed to convert Boer republics in to British colonies. Throughout this lengthy process many thousands of Boer prisoners were transported to POW camps in Bermuda, Ceylon and India. Whilst prisoner they whiled away their time creating hand crafted items (similar to the French prisoners during the Napoleonic wars). The standard of articles that were produced was so high that it soon turned into a commercial type pastime that allowed the prisoners to supplement their poor conditions with a little earned money.

This carved Croc is beautifully crafted; having 14 articulated ball joint parts inter connected via cord. The carved skin is very intricate and lifelike and his face is absolutely stunning. The large white teeth, red wooden tongue and beautiful glass eyes all add to the charm and appeal of this creature. He stands proud on four feet that are detailed even on their underside!! Because of his many swivel parts he can be so realistically displayed in many different poses.

Condition is excellent and original, we have not waxed this exotic wood. There are some age related natural markings to this wood that all add to the crocodile like skin surface. There is one white wooden tooth missing where this boy has bitten off more than he can chew!! This is certainly not detrimental.

If you love wood carvings or military history this is a fine addition to your collection. We 100% guarantee that you will adore him.
