This is an exceptional Georgian stipple engraving, true quality!! An absolutely 18th century original on laid paper with plate marks and margins, in original Georgian gilt Gesso frame with old bubbled glass, not opened since the 19th century.. if ever. There are three small areas of staining but this can be restored or overlooked - we are happy to just gaze at its beauty!!!
This is a large engraving, framed 12" by 14.5". The sheet size 10" by 12 5/8", plate size 214 mm X 268 mm.
Titled ' Tenderness', G B Cipriani inv, F Bartolozzi Sculpx (Bartolozzi was the engraver after a drawing by Cipriani). Published Sept 25 1800 by Colnaghi & Co )late Torre) No 23 Cockspur Street opposite Suffolk Street, Charing Cross.
We have three of the best names here, the original artist G B Cipriani - founder member of the Royal Academy, the world famous engraver F Bartolozzi, famed for his tonal excellence and finally publisher to his majesty the King and world class art dealer/ gallery owner Paul Colnaghi. The subject matter is timeless, a mother's love, one of the few things that have not changed since the start of time or 1800!! Every home has a special place for this endearing antique image.
Condition, backing paper a little fragile but old nails hold everything very securely. Lovely old bubbles and striations to the glass with just one or two tiny surface scratches. As mentioned previously, three areas of staining due to damp old English weather, open sooty fires etc. We are sure that by removing the print and professionally cleaning it a restorer could minimize these marks. But obviously we are unable to absolutely guarantee this. We would just hang it as is and enjoy...........
Due to its dimensions it is too large for domestic postage and will ship via Courier. Please note that we do not pay or reimburse any additional import duty or taxes that may be incurred.
