Antique French Enamel Portrait Brooch Madame Elisabeth Of France, Signed LSC

A stunning item of jewellery that is full of beauty and history. Dating from the early to mid nineteenth century we believe that this portrait plaque possibly started life as part of a Sevres portrait salon table. These tables are extremely luxurious incorporating a large central plaque surrounded by 18 or more smaller portrait plaques.

Our enamel measures 2" by 1.5". It has a bleu celeste ground with a central hand painted under enamel portrait of madame Elisabeth Of France. She is stunning with her delicately curled hair. She wears a fine pearl tiara with center cameo. She has ringlets cascading on to her shoulders. She wears a black v neck slightly off the shoulder dress with pink rose attached. The portrait is signed in black in teeny letters with a monogram of what appears to be LSC. The oval portrait of Elisabeth is surrounded by tiny white enamel dots to imitate pearls. They each sit on a collar of gilt. The entire enamel plaque is housed within a yellow metal frame. We have no testing equipment but we are sure that this is gold or gold plated at least 10 ct. Having a steel pin and later securing safety clasp. We have not removed the metal backing plate to be able to check for sevres marks.

Condition is good but not pristine. Two small white enamel pearls are missing.Three imperfection around the circumference at 10, 11 and 1 O'clock. The one at 10 O'clock is a flake. You might think that there is also damage at 6 O' clock but please be assured that this is a firing fault where enamel has accumulated and pooled. Some minor surface wear to her face. The LSC monogram is SO small no camera could photograph it. It appears just above the missing jewel at 6 O'clock. This is a divine item to add to your French collection.

A too brief synopsis of Madame. Madame Elisabeth was born in 1764 to Louis, Dauphin of France. Her brother went on to become Louis XVI of France. She was a well liked royal with many attributes. She was a devout Catholic with a strong sense of duty and devotion to her brother. It was this family allegiance that contributed to her execution on 10th May 1794. She is still in the process of being Beatified, part of the Canonization process. For an intriguing look into the past, we can thoroughly recommend The Madame Guillotine blog. A fascinating post from an inspirational young historian. See our links to the left, be warned like any good book, it is very difficult to stop reading.........
