Antique Victorian Stamp Case, Silk Embroidered Verse "In England Letters Find No Grace

A curious yet whimsical little case for keeping one's precious stamps clean and safe. This case was made in England around the 1845-55 period. Don't forget that the British postal service only came into existence as we know it today in 1837. Prior to that the way of sending letters was extremely complex and expensive. Rowland Hill simplified the service, recommended a method of prepayment to be sorted before the letter went anywhere and designed a "a bit of paper just large enough to bear the stamp, and covered at the back with a glutinous wash." Later to become the first sticky back stamp called The Penny Black. This new idea of charging by weight instead of distance and requiring the sender to pay not the recipient meant that the stamp became a worldwide necessity and a better postal service was born.

But once you had purchased your one penny stamp you needed somewhere safe to store it. What simpler case can one have than two small sheets of perforated Bristol Board held together by strong red silk thread. An uplifting verse stitched to the front and back in pale blue silk thread makes the perfect decoration. It reads....

In England Letters To the reverse To guard her head Find no grace- From dust or damp Unless they bear Accept this Victoria's face. For postage stamps

Measuring a mere 2.4" by 2.2". Condition is excellent. It is missing its original little paper insert but easily replaced with a folded piece of paper. A super item to add to your collection or a super sampler for a dolls house wall!
