Antique 1500's Jacobean Needlework Embroidery
Measuring 8.5" by 8.25" within a 11.75" square pine frame. The velvet ground is a dark gold/dark tan color. It has a raised work winged putti. Exceptional metal thread embroidery with divine silk work fruit and foliage within the cornucopia. Many techniques are used including couching, purl/ perl, metal wrapped thread work. We love the basket of raised work fruit above his head! This textile was purchased in this frame. In our opinion it needs removal and reframed within a conservation standard frame.
Condition. Please ignore any reflections on the glass. This textile is showing its age and is in POOR condition. The velvet ground has faded over the centuries and has many areas of deterioration. It would need to be handled with extreme care when reframing. The flesh color tiny embroidered stitches on the putti shows age related wear. The silk has worn back to the ground. Dust trapped under the glass. The embroidered motifs could be cut around and applied to a new velvet backing.
A rare example of expert embroidery from a period when these techniques were flourishing.
