Rare Antique 18th Century Needlework, Profuse Goldwork Embroidery 1700's,

A large and decorative antique textile ready to adorn your wall. Constructed in the 1700's from beautiful chenille thread & profuse use of metal threads of gold and bronze, worked on a voided velvet ground. Due to the armorial subject matter and profuse use of metal thread, we have a hunch that is a religious piece, either Italian or French. Very similar chenille needlework to a Torah Mantle as seen on the Sephardi Torah mantle from the Portuguese Synagogue in Amsterdam

The raised work coat of arms with crown above is embroidered on canvas. The tightly packed, heavily embellished gobelin stitches create a thick and heavy motif. The yellow silk core threads have gold metal wrapped around them(file). Each gobelin stitch is made up of six of these metal wrapped threads gathered together. Can you imagine how this was made, let alone the weight of the finished article. We have not researched the embroidered charges on each shield. We leave this pleasure to the new owner.

Measuring 37 inches(3 ft) wide by 24.5 inches (2 ft 1")high.

Condition is good. The double coat of arms motif has been crudely secured to the velvet with large stitches, a neater job could be done. Likewise, some of the antique metal brocade edging is a little loose. Easily stitched. The original chenille thread has mostly worn bare over the centuries so that only the cotton core remains. Some feint traces left of the original chenille threads on the Ermine type decoration within the crown. Originally, the entire coat of arms would have been really vibrant. Traces of this can be seen on the very edges of the metal threadwork. The gold and bronze threads are much duller now. Substantial cotton backing to the reverse with some old paint splashes.

This is a very interesting and decorative antique textile although purchased in England, we wonder if it is of Italian origin. It reminds us of a panel depicting The Matamorphoses of Ovid and bearing the arms of a Cardinal in the Musee Royaux d'Art, Brussels. See Plate 22 Figures On Fabric, Margaret Swain....Anyway, plenty of research to be done as we do not always have the time. The perfect conversation piece for your wall. Great in gents study; we can imagine it with trophies or animals either side. A true interior designer's item.
