Here for your buying consideration is a RARE, ALL ORIGINAL and ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL FRENCH PORTAIT FACED JOAN OF ARC on a JEWEL BOX This piece is TRULY MUSEUM QUALITY! Circa 1860-1880.
Joan of Arc, nicknamed "The Maid of Orléans" - French: Jeanne d'Arc, was a folk heroine of France and a Roman Catholic saint. A peasant girl, born in what is now Eastern France who claimed divine guidance, led the French army to several important victories during the Hundred Years' War, which paved the way for the coronation of Charles VII of France. She was captured by the Burgundians, transferred to the English in exchange for money, put on trial by the pro-English Bishop of Beauvais Pierre Cauchon for charges of "insubordination and heterodoxy," and was burned at the stake for heresy when she was only 19 years old.
Presenting here, depicting the 15th Century heroine, is a STUNNING and BEAUTIFUL bisque head Portrait Faced figure with an UNUSUAL, LONG ARISTOCRATIC FACE! She has pierced ears,
lovely blue eyes, , finely executed brown eyebrows, gorgeous long eyelashes, soft, warmly blushed cheeks and a sweetly painted mouth, with delineation of the philtrum present. Her EXQUISITE strawberry blonde mohair wig falls in soft curls to her waist! Her bisque head is FREE OF ANY REPAIRS, HAIRLINES, or DEFECTS! The head is marked at the back of her crown, under the wig, with what appears to be the number one (1). She stands a total height of 18 ½ inches including the jewel box and Joan of Arc herself stands 14 ¾ inches height.
The body of this piece is CONSTRUCTED OF WOOD, with her arms being BISQUE TO THE ELBOWS. The body is made rather crudely, as the ELEGANCE OF THIS PIECE IS IN THE FACE and SUIT OF ARMOR! Very fine delineation was given to her hands and fingernails. One hand is perfect, however, the other hand has sustained damage to three fingers and a re-glue to the thumb, which I have provided a picture of for your viewing.
Her CHAIN NAIL LINK and SILVER PLATE SUIT OF ARMOR is REMARKABLE! It consists of her FACE MASK HELMET with a MOVEABLE VISOR – the CHEST PLATE WITH A VERY DETAILED REMOVEABLE CHASED SWORD, attached by way of a LEATHER BELT and METAL SHEATH. The arms and hem trim is CHAIN NAIL LINK over a NAVY BLUE VELVET TUNIC. The tunic does show some normal age related wear spots here and there. Her foot cover is constructed of SILVER METAL PLATE with pointed toes. The metal covering attaches over the knee area. The CRAFTMANSHIP of this suit of armor is FABULOUS! The metal sword even has SCROLLING just under the handle of the piece!
She stands upon a ROYAL BLUE VELVET JEWEL BOX that is decorated with designs of SILVER PLATE FLEUR DE LIS at each corner. The velvet box does possess some normal age related wear spots. It has a pull drawer in the front with a SILVER PLATE PULL HANDLE!
Joan of Arc was awarded the UFDC PRESIDENT'S CHOICE RIBBON and FIRST PRIZE at the October, 1977 CONVENTION. Her ribbon will, of course, come with her.
One simply does not come across RARE, FABULOUS and STUNNING pieces such as this JOAN OF ARC too often! I, myself, have only seen one other. She's an UNUSUAL, BEAUTIFUL, and EXEMPLARY example of this French heroine! She would make a MARVELOUS ADDITION to any doll collection!
