This graceful and ornate gold filled uniquely shaped locket is beautifully engraved on the outside with two hearts (ready for engraving if desired) and three rose gold flowers with pale green tinted leaves. It has a lovely scrolled edge design with intricate detailing. Called taille d'epargne, this relief cutting/engraving process adds depth and definition, typical of the late Victorian era; a design the Hayward Company is known for. It is unusual to find a locket with the hinge on the right side as this has, it opens out from the left side. The locket opens and closes properly, with a nice crisp click. The hinge is sturdy and tight, barely noticeable from the outside, and it stays closed very securely. The back also has a lovely design, engraved lines that form a symmetrical pattern typical of the Hayward company. It is marked Hayward 1/20 -12k Gold-filled on the inside on a slightly raised cartouche. It has a warm vintage patina, but the outside is still shiny. You can't tell unless you look very closely, but there is a little wear on the back-more noticeable in my magnified pictures than in person, and a tiny scratch on the heart in the front. These really do not detract from its beauty. This beautiful locket necklace weighs 10 grams or .3 ounces, and measures just under 1 1/4 of an inch long (excluding the 1/4 inch long bale) and 13/16 of an inch wide. The inside has one frame to hold the photo (most likely a serviceman, can't make out the uniform), it is a little "wonky", with some bending, but fits and holds. The inside of the picture wells have a lip so that pictures can fit under without a frame if needed. You can easily add/remove your own pictures. The lovely chain is a gold filled rolo style, the ring next to the clasp is marked 1/20 12KT.G.F, and is 18 inches in length, nicely sturdy and very pretty. It is also in fabulous condition, and the clasp is fully functional. The Walter E Hayward Co was founded in 1851 in East Providence, RI and is considered one of the oldest fine jewelry manufacturers in the US. This particular hallmark was used after 1904. The company merged with the A&Z Chain Co. in 1970 to form the A&Z Hayward Co. A beautiful locket to add to your collection and/or keep loved ones close to your heart!
