This lovely vintage pre Eagle 1940's or earlier Mexican sterling leaf and grapes earrings and matching brooch pin demi parure has lovely, curled tendrils. This is a very popular design, made by most Mexican silversmiths during the heyday of the silver. The gracefully shaped and quite dimensional earrings are 1 and ¼ inches long and ¾ of an inch wide, with perfectly functional screw backs. The brooch pin is 2 inches long and 1 and ¾ of an inch across at the widest. The repousse grapes are perfect, and the curling tendrils and incised leaf details are amazingly well crafted. Many of these sets I've seen over the years have more variations between the 2 earrings, as they are handmade and not expected to be identical, as if machine produced. It takes a real maestro to handcraft them so masterfully so that they are this similar. These lack the government mandated eagle assay, dating them to pre 1948, which makes them harder to find and very collectible. The back of the pin and each earring have the mark of a Mexico City silversmith (or one from Taxco that sent them down the mountain to the capital, which was often the case), marked Hecho en Mexico DF in a circle around the initials TNC and 0925, an early mark for Sterling quality silver. This hallmark is referenced on page 239 of Bille Hougart's oft-referenced source book, THE LITTLE BOOK OF MEXICAN SILVER TRADE AND HALLMARKS, 2006 ed. The brooch is also marked Sterling 925 a second time. There is a bit of solder pooling from manufacture on the back of the brooch's grape cluster, noted for accuracy and does not detract in any way. These have a rich, heavy patina, yet are still luminous and could be polished up to a high shine if desired. In excellent vintage condition, these are a wonderful addition to any silver collection!
