An exquisite Opaline French casket with gold ormolu mounts decorated with egg and dart motifs which were so typical of this period at the beginning of the most decorative period in France's history. This period became known as the Napoleon the Third epoch or Napoleon III period. It was the period where French decorative design reached its zenith in terms of creativity.
This beautiful casket has a simple but very stylish design. Two pieces of hand molded Opaline glass are joined by a gold ormolu mount which includes a hinge. A thumb piece on the mount makes opening and closing quite easy. Each of the four upright edges were squared away at right angles to create this multi-faceted box design. The faceted corners add to the tactile nature of this design and creates the aesthetic design that is so typical of French jewelry boxes of this period.
This Opaline casket is in flawless condition.There are no chips, cracks, flea bites or scratches to the Opaline glass. The frame is perfectly attached and the hinges are in excellent working order.
It measures 5 1/2 wide by 4 1/2 inches high by 3 1/2 inches deep. The glass is on average 3/8 of an inch thick. It weighs 2 pounds 4 ounces. It is designed to hold larger pieces of jewelry.
