A rare and unique Victorian coffin snuff box. An iconic quirky Victorian antique.
Measuring 2 3/8 inches by 1 1/4 inches by 1 inch high.
The year 1881 in pique point can be read just above the hinge. On the underside is a pique point bird. Four inlaid brass coffin handles and a brass breast plate complete the mountings on this coffin. The lid is secured with a brass hinge which has four hand made screws.
This snuff box is in very good condition. A piece of the coffin foot was re- fixed securely sometime in the past. The hinge is in excellent working order and the lid closes securely.
There is a brass snuff box of similar design in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London from earlier in the 19c which was associated with mourning. Free snuff was supplied to mourners, a suitable snuff box, such as this one, would remind those present that it was a sad occasion and of their own mortality. Free drink and snuff tended to make funerals into festive occasions. A little snuff box like this rare one would help re-focus the mourners.
