Antique Card Case Carte de Visite Mother of Pearl Etched Carved Pink Butterfly Dragon Fly

A stunning card case etched in pink with a bouquet of flowers. A butterfly and a dragon fly hover around the flowers indicating the fabulous fragrance that attracts them to the flowers. In style it is dated to the 1880 period.

A carte de visite case was an essential possession for nineteenth century society ladies as it was essential to send your visiting card ahead before calling on your friends. Ladies competed to have the most decorative card cases and this beautiful example is in the top echelon of decorative card cases.

This card case exudes femininity and it seems quite clear from its exceptional quality that it was rarely used or was used only on very exceptional occasions. I like to think that the owner had an everyday card case and used this beauty only when they needed to impress.

It measures 4 inches by 3 inches. There are no cracks or splits and it is structurally sound. The hinge and clasp are in excellent working order.

The Mother of Pearl is of exceptional quality, the iridescence creates refracted colors of pearl and shimmering emerald.

A blank silver cartouche on the top allows you personalize this wonderful antique.
